How are you feeling today? You made it through the holidays, I hope, unscathed by hurtful comments or innuendos from friends and family. If it was a difficult holiday period, what are you doing to move beyond and above it?
While every day is an opportunity to start over, the beginning of a new year is particularly appropriate to change things up. The single most important thing you can do for your mental and emotional health and well-being, especially if you are working on being more body positive, is to detach yourself from people who are toxic. Cut the people loose who do nothing but spread negativity and make you feel bad about yourself. If they make you feel sad, angry, depressed or foster feelings of self-doubt and self-hatred, then you should not be giving them a space in your world. I know that letting people go can be a difficult thing but like the image above says, you are strong and you can do it.
Delete or unfollow anyone on social media that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. If you receive an invitation from someone you’d prefer not to spend time with then make an excuse as to why you’re unavailable. Given enough excuses, that person will hopefully get the hint you’re not too anxious to be in their company. Family might be a little more difficult and may require a good old-fashion heart to heart conversation. If that doesn’t wake them up, then keep your distance as much as possible, try not to be alone with them and bring support to family gatherings; someone you know who has your back.
If you are in an abusive “love” relationship, whether it be emotional, mental or physical abuse, you must run, run away and fast. Find support either professional like a counsellor, support group, help line or shelter or from loving friends and family. You are wonderful and amazing and deserve someone who loves you unconditionally and appropriately. Insults and bruises are not signs of love. They are signs of control and you are worthy of so much better!
Be Pretty, Plus and Proud and let 2017 be your year that you surround yourself with positivity. On your bad days, be confident that you have the capability within you to get through it. Every sunrise is the opportunity to begin again so gather your strength and venture forth one small step at a time.
